Burg Eltz

Perched on a rocky spur above the Elzbach River, Burg Eltz is a storybook medieval castle that has remained in the same family for over 850 years. Unlike many German castles that were rebuilt in the 19th century, Burg Eltz survived the ages largely unscathed, offering an authentic glimpse into castle life. Its fairy-tale towers, half-timbered facades, and lush forest setting make it one of the most photogenic castles in Europe. For international travellers, it's a must-see on any Rhine or Moselle road trip, combining history, architecture, and stunning natural scenery.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for at least 2–3 hours to tour the castle and grounds. Arrive early to avoid crowds and to enjoy the peaceful forest walks. If you're driving, combine Burg Eltz with a morning visit to nearby Moselle vineyards or the town of Cochem. The castle is less crowded in the afternoon on weekdays.
