Bundeena is a sleepy coastal village on the southern edge of Sydney's Royal National Park, offering a perfect blend of bush and beach. Accessible only by ferry or a winding road through the park, it feels a world away from the city. The village has a laid-back, artistic vibe, with a handful of cafes and galleries, but the real draw is the stunning natural setting: pristine beaches, coastal walks, and Aboriginal heritage sites.
Highlights & What to See
- Jibbon Beach and Shelly Beach – Two beautiful, calm beaches ideal for swimming, kayaking, or just lazing on the sand. Shelly Beach is particularly sheltered and family-friendly.
- Bundeena to Marley Walk – A spectacular coastal trail within Royal National Park, passing dramatic cliffs, secluded beaches, and Aboriginal midden sites. The full return walk takes about 4 hours, but you can do shorter sections.
- Aboriginal Rock Engravings at Jibbon Head – Ancient carvings of whales, fish, and kangaroos etched into the sandstone, offering a glimpse into the area's Indigenous heritage. A short, easy walk from Jibbon Beach.
- Royal National Park – Australia's oldest national park, right on Bundeena's doorstep. Explore its rainforest, heathland, and waterfalls; the Figure Eight Pools are a famous (but tricky) natural attraction nearby.
- Bundeena Village – Charming cafes like the Sea Breeze Cafe and the Bundeena General Store, plus local art galleries. Pick up supplies or enjoy a relaxed lunch.
Suggested Time to Spend
Bundeena is best enjoyed as a day trip from Sydney or as a relaxed overnight stay. If you're doing the coastal walk and visiting the beaches, allow a full day. For a slower pace – maybe a swim, a walk to the engravings, and a café lunch – half a day is sufficient. Overnighters can enjoy sunset at Jibbon Beach and a quiet evening in the village.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
