Buna Battle Site

On Papua New Guinea's remote north coast, the Buna Battle Site is a sobering and profound destination for anyone interested in WWII history. This was the scene of brutal fighting between Australian and Japanese forces in late 1942–early 1943, part of the larger Kokoda Track campaign. Today the jungle has reclaimed much of the battlefield, but remnants of bunkers, trenches, and aircraft wrecks remain, creating a powerful open-air museum. The area's isolation adds to its haunting atmosphere, and visiting requires a sense of adventure and respect for the past.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate at least half a day to fully absorb the site, especially if you're taking a guided walk. The terrain is rugged and often muddy, so sturdy footwear is essential. Many visitors combine Buna with a trip to the nearby Kokoda Track or Popondetta, making it a full-day excursion from those bases.
