Buderoo National Park
Buderoo National Park is a wild, untamed slice of Australia’s Northern Rivers region, where ancient Gondwana rainforest meets dramatic escarpments and cascading waterfalls. This World Heritage-listed park offers a deeply immersive nature experience, with walking trails that wind through towering brush box and Antarctic beech forests, past crystal-clear creeks and lookouts that stretch to the coast. It’s a place for hikers, birdwatchers, and anyone seeking solitude in one of the country’s most biodiverse landscapes.
Highlights & What to See
- Forest Tops Walk: A spectacular boardwalk that takes you through the canopy of a subtropical rainforest, offering bird’s-eye views of the treetops and the chance to spot rare birds like the Albert’s lyrebird.
- Minyon Falls Lookout: Peer over the edge of a 100-metre basalt cliff to see the powerful waterfall plunging into the valley below. The short walk to the lookout is wheelchair-accessible.
- Protesters Falls: A serene, multi-tiered waterfall that was the site of the famous Terania Creek protests in the 1970s, which helped protect the rainforest. The swimming hole at the base is a refreshing reward after a short walk.
- Rummery Park Campground: A peaceful, basic camping area surrounded by eucalypt forest, ideal for stargazing and listening to the sounds of the bush at night.
- Nightlife: Join a guided nocturnal walk to spot glow-worms, possums, and the park’s iconic eastern yellow robin. The forest comes alive after dark.
Suggested Time to Spend
Buderoo National Park is best explored over a full day, allowing time for a couple of main walks and a picnic. Most visitors spend 4–6 hours here, combining the Forest Tops Walk with a visit to Minyon Falls. For a quick visit, a two-hour loop to Protesters Falls and the lookout is rewarding.
