Broken Head Nature Reserve is a stunning coastal gem on the far north coast of New South Wales, offering dramatic headlands, secluded beaches, and lush subtropical rainforest. This peaceful reserve is a haven for nature lovers and surfers, with panoramic ocean views, walking trails, and a sense of seclusion that feels a world away from the nearby Byron Bay crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Whites Beach – A pristine, patrolled beach with powerful surf and a scenic backdrop of coastal heath. Perfect for swimming (when conditions allow) or a long walk at low tide.
- Broken Head Lookout – A short walk from the car park rewards you with breathtaking views of the rocky headland, the shimmering Pacific, and migrating whales in season (June–November).
- Rainforest Walk – Explore the 1.5 km loop trail through subtropical rainforest, where towering bangalow palms and ancient figs create a cool, green canopy. Listen for the call of the wompoo fruit-dove.
- Surfing at Broken Head – The northern end of Whites Beach is a renowned surf break, offering both left and right-hand waves. It’s less crowded than Byron’s main breaks.
- Picnic & Barbecue Areas – Sheltered spots with tables and barbecues are tucked among the trees, ideal for a relaxed lunch with ocean views.
Suggested Time to Spend
A half-day is sufficient to explore the main highlights: walk the rainforest loop (allow 45 minutes), take in the lookout, and spend an hour or two on the beach. If you plan to surf or simply soak up the atmosphere, budget a full day. The reserve is compact, so you can easily combine it with a morning at Byron Bay or a coastal drive.
