Deep in the heart of the NSW mid-north coast, Boorganna Nature Reserve is a pocket of ancient Gondwana rainforest that feels a world away from the coastal crowds. This serene reserve protects one of the last remaining stands of subtropical lowland rainforest in the region, where towering red cedar and brush box trees create a cathedral-like canopy. Walking the mossy trails, you’ll hear the constant trickle of creeks and the chatter of rainforest birds – it’s a place for quiet immersion rather than adrenaline.
Highlights & What to See
- Rainforest Walks – The 1.5km loop trail winds through towering palms, strangler figs and tree ferns, with interpretive signs revealing the forest’s secrets. Keep an eye out for whipbirds and green catbirds.
- Boorganna Creek – Crystal-clear pools and small cascades offer a cooling dip on a hot day. The water is pristine and inviting.
- Birdwatching Paradise – The reserve is a haven for birdlife, including the elusive rufous fantail and paradise riflebird. Early morning is best.
- Picnic by the Creek – A simple picnic area near the entrance lets you soak up the forest ambience with the sound of flowing water.
- Ancient Trees – Look out for the massive red cedar stumps from logging days, and the towering brush box trees that survived – a living link to the region’s natural heritage.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ample to experience the reserve’s main walking track, enjoy a picnic and explore the creek. If you’re a dedicated birdwatcher or photographer, allow a full morning to catch the best light and activity. The reserve is compact, so you won’t need more than four hours to feel its essence.
