Bonnieux
Perched high in the Luberon, Bonnieux is a classic Provençal hilltop village that rewards visitors with sweeping views of vineyards, cherry orchards, and the distant Mont Ventoux. Its steep, winding streets are lined with stone houses, artisan boutiques, and cafés that invite lingering. The village is less crowded than its neighbour Gordes, offering a more laid-back yet equally authentic Provençal experience.
Highlights & What to See
- Wander the narrow lanes to the 12th-century church at the top, with its panoramic terrace that offers one of the best views in the Luberon
- Visit the Musée de la Boulangerie, a fascinating museum housed in a former bakery that traces the history of bread-making
- Explore the Jardin de la Louve, a terraced garden that cascades down the hillside with sculptures, lavender, and olive trees
- Discover the Roman bridge of Julien, a remarkably preserved ancient bridge just outside the village
- Stroll the Saturday morning market (April–October) for local produce, honey, and lavender products
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate half a day to explore Bonnieux itself — enough time to climb to the church, visit the museum, and enjoy a leisurely lunch with a view. If you plan to hike the surrounding trails or visit nearby villages, a full day is ideal. Many travellers combine Bonnieux with a loop through the Luberon villages over two to three days.
