Stretching six kilometres along Sydney’s eastern seaboard, the Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk is one of the world’s great urban seaside rambles. This clifftop trail delivers a heady mix of pounding surf, golden sand, ocean pools, and postcard-perfect views, all while linking some of the city’s most beloved beaches. It’s a walk that captures the essence of Sydney’s outdoor lifestyle — expect to share the path with joggers, dog walkers, and families, but the ever-changing seascape makes every step feel like a discovery.
Highlights & What to See
- Bondi Beach: Start at Australia’s most famous beach, where the golden arc of sand meets the iconic Icebergs ocean pool. Grab a coffee and watch the surfers before you head south.
- Tamarama Beach: Known as ‘Glamarama’ for its chic crowd, this small, sheltered beach is wedged between cliffs — perfect for a quick dip or people-watching.
- Bronte Beach: A family favourite with a large ocean pool, grassy park, and excellent cafés. The Bronte Baths are a highlight for a saltwater swim without the waves.
- Waverley Cemetery: Perched on dramatic cliffs, this historic cemetery is unexpectedly beautiful — wander among ornate Victorian headstones with the Tasman Sea as a backdrop.
- Clovelly Beach: A narrow, sheltered bay ideal for snorkelling and lap swimming. The calm waters attract turtles and fish, making it a great spot for a mask and fins.
- Gordons Bay: A protected marine reserve with a underwater nature trail for snorkellers — follow the submerged markers to see colourful marine life.
- Coogee Beach: The walk’s end point, a laid-back beach with a lively promenade, ocean pools, and a string of pubs and restaurants perfect for a post-walk beer or fish and chips.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 2 to 3 hours for a leisurely stroll with plenty of photo stops, swims, and coffee breaks. The full walk is about 6 km one-way, with gentle undulations and some stairs. Many people do it in half a day, starting mid-morning from Bondi and finishing in Coogee for lunch. If you’re short on time, you can easily do a shorter section — Bondi to Bronte (2.5 km) is the most popular and takes about 45 minutes each way. For sunset, start from Coogee around 4 pm and walk north to watch the sun dip into the ocean from the cliffs near Waverley Cemetery.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Sydney CBD & The Rocks: Combine the coastal walk with a day in the city — explore the historic Rocks district, Sydney Opera House, and Harbour Bridge.
- Royal National Park: For more epic coastal scenery, head south to Australia’s oldest national park for the Coast Track (a multi-day hike) or day walks to Figure Eight Pools.
- Manly & Northern Beaches: Take a ferry from Circular Quay to Manly for a different coastal vibe — the Manly to Spit Bridge Walk is a stunning 10 km trail.
- Paddington & Oxford Street: The inner-city suburb of Paddington is just a short bus ride from Bondi — browse its Victorian terraces, boutiques, and art galleries.
- Watsons Bay & South Head: North of Bondi, the South Head walk offers lighthouse views and the famous ‘The Gap’ cliff lookout — easily reached by bus from the city.
