Berner Oberland
With its soaring peaks, turquoise lakes, and postcard-perfect villages, the Berner Oberland is the Swiss Alps distilled to their purest essence. This is where you come to stand beneath the Eiger’s north face, hear the roar of the Jungfrau Railway, and lose yourself in meadows that smell of hay and wildflowers. Whether you’re hiking between mountain huts, cruising Lake Brienz, or sipping mulled wine in a 400-year-old chalet, the region delivers a deep, visceral connection to the alpine world.
Highlights & What to See
- Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe: The iconic cogwheel train ride to Europe’s highest railway station (3,454 m) is a rite of passage. The panorama from the Sphinx Observatory stretches across the Aletsch Glacier to the Mont Blanc massif.
- Schilthorn & Piz Gloria: Ride the cable car up to the revolving restaurant made famous by James Bond’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. The 360-degree view over Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau is breathtaking.
- Lauterbrunnen Valley: With 72 waterfalls plunging over sheer cliffs — including the thunderous Staubbach Falls — this valley inspired J.R.R. Tolkien’s Rivendell. Walk the path to Trümmelbach Falls, a series of glacial waterfalls inside the mountain.
- Lake Brienz & Giessbach Falls: The milky turquoise water of Lake Brienz is stunning from the Belle Époque paddle steamer. Hike up to the Giessbach Falls, which cascade 500 m over forested tiers.
- Grindelwald First: A mountain-top adventure hub with the cliff walk “First View,” a zipline, and hiking trails to Bachalpsee, where the reflection of the Schreckhorn shimmers in the water.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give the Berner Oberland at least three to five days. Spend two days based in Interlaken as your hub: one for Jungfraujoch and Lauterbrunnen, another for Schilthorn and a lake cruise. Add a day for Grindelwald First and a hike, and another to explore the quieter Kandersteg or Oeschinensee. If you’re self-driving, the route via the Grimsel or Susten Pass adds dramatic high-alpine driving. Don’t rush — the best moments are the unhurried ones: a picnic by a lake, an evening in a mountain restaurant, the sound of cowbells fading into the dusk.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Interlaken: The adventure-sports capital between two lakes, with paragliding, skydiving, and boat trips.
- Zermatt & the Matterhorn: A two-hour train ride west takes you to the iconic pyramid peak and car-free village.
- Lucerne & Lake Lucerne: Combine with a trip to Mount Pilatus or Rigi for a classic Swiss experience.
- Bern: Switzerland’s underrated capital, with its medieval arcades and the bear pit, is an easy day trip.
- Jungfrau Region hiking trails: The Eiger Trail, the Panorama Trail to Männlichen, and the path from Kleine Scheidegg to Wengen are all unforgettable.
