Benissa
Perched on a rocky spur between the sea and the mountains, Benissa is one of the Costa Blanca's most underrated gems. Its historic old town, a labyrinth of cobblestone streets and noble mansions, feels a world away from the package-holiday strip. With a stunning rocky coastline, an excellent local wine scene, and a genuinely lived-in Spanish character, Benissa rewards those who slow down and explore.
Highlights & What to See
- Old Town (Casc Antic) — Wander the narrow streets past Gothic and Renaissance mansions, the 16th-century Town Hall, and the striking Forat de la Muralla (a tunnel through the old city walls). Don't miss the mirador at Plaça de l'Església Vella for panoramic views.
- Playa de la Fustera — A sheltered cove with crystalline waters, backed by cliffs and pine trees. It's quieter than the big resort beaches, perfect for a relaxed swim or snorkel.
- Cala de la Llobella — A wilder, nudist-friendly rocky cove accessed via a cliffside path. The clear water and dramatic rock formations make it a favourite for photographers and solitude seekers.
- Bodegas (Wineries) — The surrounding countryside is dotted with family-run bodegas producing excellent reds and rosés. Many offer tastings and tours; Bodega Les Freses is a standout for its organic wines and olive oils.
- Ruta de les Fonts — A walking route that connects the town's historic fountains, used for centuries by locals. It's a lovely way to combine a stroll with a peek into daily life.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two nights is ideal: one full day for the old town and a coastal walk, plus a second day for a winery visit and a lazy afternoon at a cala. If you're short on time, Benissa works well as a half-day stop en route between Altea and Calpe, but you'll want to linger longer.
