Bells Rapids is a dramatic stretch of the Avon River where the water funnels through a narrow granite gorge, creating a churning spectacle after rain. Located about 30 minutes north-east of Perth, this is a favourite weekend escape for locals who come to hike, picnic, and watch kayakers brave the rapids. The surrounding bushland feels ancient, with huge granite outcrops and eucalypts framing the river. It’s a place that rewards early starts and a willingness to get your boots dusty.
Highlights & What to See
- Walk the Eagle View Trail – This 2.5 km loop climbs to a lookout that peers down into the gorge. In spring, wildflowers carpet the understorey, and you might spot a wedge-tailed eagle riding the thermals above the river.
- Watch the Rapids in Action – The best time to see the river roaring is a day or two after heavy rain. The granite chutes turn into white-water cascades, and kayakers often run the rapids for a heart-in-mouth thrill.
- River Crossing Rocks – Just below the car park, flat granite slabs let you walk right out over the river when the flow is low. It’s a perfect spot for a picnic or a cooling paddle.
- Birdlife and Wildlife – Keep an eye out for kangaroos grazing near the river at dawn and dusk, and listen for the calls of red-tailed black cockatoos overhead.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough to tackle the Eagle View Trail, explore the riverbanks, and enjoy a relaxed picnic. Arrive early (before 9am) on weekends and public holidays to secure a parking spot, as the small car park fills quickly. If you want to combine it with a longer walk, the nearby Brigadoon Trail network can extend your visit to a full day.
