Just 25 kilometres east of Perth, John Forrest National Park offers a refreshing escape into Western Australia's oldest national park. Named after the state's first premier, this 1,500-hectare reserve is a patchwork of granite outcrops, towering jarrah and marri forests, and seasonal waterfalls. It's a favourite for walkers, cyclists, and picnickers seeking an easy dose of wild nature without venturing far from the city.
Highlights & What to See
- Eagle View Walk Trail: A 15-kilometre loop that takes in the park's best features – look for the historic Swan View Tunnel, a former railway tunnel carved through granite, and Hovea Falls, which flow after rain.
- John Forrest Tavern: A quirky pub inside the park, perfect for a cold beer or a hearty meal after a walk. It's a local institution with a beer garden overlooking the bush.
- Granite outcrops and wildflowers: Spring brings a spectacular display of orchids, kangaroo paws, and everlastings. The smooth granite domes offer panoramic views of the Darling Scarp.
- Cycling and mountain biking: The park has several fire trails and single tracks suitable for mountain biking, including the popular Railway Reserves Heritage Trail.
- Aboriginal heritage: The area is significant to the Noongar people; look for informational signs about traditional land use and the Dreaming story of the Waugal (rainbow serpent).
Suggested Time to Spend
A half-day is enough for a short walk and a pub lunch, but dedicated hikers and cyclists can easily spend a full day exploring the trail network. Arrive early in summer to avoid the heat, and bring plenty of water – the park can get very dry. The best time to visit is between August and November when the waterfalls are flowing and wildflowers are at their peak.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Perth Hills National Park: Adjacent to John Forrest, this park offers more walking trails and lookout points, including the popular Bickley Brook Reservoir.
- Swan Valley: A 30-minute drive west, this wine region is famous for its cellar doors, breweries, and gourmet produce. Combine a morning in the park with an afternoon of wine tasting.
