Batu Bolong, meaning 'hole rock' in Indonesian, is a laid-back coastal village on the northwest coast of Bali, renowned for its world-class surf breaks, bohemian vibe, and stunning sunsets. This is the epicentre of Bali's surf culture, with a reef break that peels perfectly over a coral reef, drawing wave riders from across the globe. Beyond the surf, Batu Bolong offers a mellow, creative atmosphere with a strip of stylish cafes, boutiques, and warungs (local eateries) lining the beach. It's the perfect spot to unwind, watch the surfers, and soak up the island's easygoing energy.
Highlights & What to See
- Batu Bolong Beach: The main draw – a long stretch of black sand with a famous surf break. Even if you don't surf, it's a prime spot for a sunset stroll or a cold Bintang at one of the beachfront bars.
- Surfing at Batu Bolong: The left-hand reef break is consistent and suitable for intermediate to advanced surfers. Rent a board or take a lesson from one of the many local surf schools.
- Sunset at the Beach: Head to the beach around 5pm to secure a beanbag at a warung like The Shady Shack or La Brisa – the sunsets here are legendary, with silhouettes of surfers against a fiery sky.
- Local Food Scene: Batu Bolong is a foodie haven. Don't miss the smoothie bowls at Crate Cafe, the tacos at Taco Casa, or the fresh grilled fish at a beachside warung.
- Batu Bolong Temple: Perched on a rocky outcrop at the southern end of the beach, this small Hindu temple is a sacred site and offers a great photo op, especially at sunset.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can easily spend a full day here – surf in the morning, grab a late breakfast at a hip cafe, then lounge on the beach or explore the boutiques in the afternoon. For a more relaxed pace, plan on two to three days to truly soak in the vibe, take a surf lesson, and explore the nearby areas. The beauty of Batu Bolong is that you can do as much or as little as you like – it's the kind of place where you can happily lose track of time.
