Bass Coast Rail Trail
Winding through the serene landscapes of South Gippsland, the Bass Coast Rail Trail is a 23-kilometre multi-use path that follows the former railway line between Anderson and Wonthaggi. This easy, car-free trail offers cyclists, walkers, and horse riders a peaceful journey through coastal heathlands, farmland, and historic railway towns. With its gentle gradients and well-maintained surface, it's perfect for families and casual riders looking to explore the region's natural beauty and pioneer history at a leisurely pace.
Highlights & What to See
- Anderson to Kilcunda – The northern section hugs the coast with stunning ocean views, passing over the iconic Kilcunda Trestle Bridge, a timber railway bridge offering panoramic vistas of Bass Strait.
- Kilcunda Beach & Ocean View – Stop at the Kilcunda car park to watch surfers and hang gliders, or take a short walk to the beach for a refreshing dip.
- Historic Railway Stations – Restored station buildings at Kilcunda and Wonthaggi provide a glimpse into the region's coal-mining and railway past, with interpretive signs and picnic tables.
- Wonthaggi Wetlands – Near the trail's southern end, these wetlands are a haven for birdlife, including swans, ducks, and herons. A short detour leads to the Wonthaggi Wind Farm, where you can see towering turbines up close.
- Wonthaggi Town Centre – The trail ends at Wonthaggi's historic railway precinct, now home to a museum, café, and the popular Wonthaggi Farmers' Market (Saturdays).
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow a half-day (3–4 hours) to cycle the full trail one way, including stops for photos and snacks. Many riders prefer to start at Anderson and ride south, finishing in Wonthaggi for a coffee or lunch at the old station café. If you're walking or taking it slow, allow 4–5 hours. The trail is also doable as a 2–3 hour ride from either end, returning the same way – the gentle grade makes it easy to backtrack.
