Carved into the emerald-green Cordillera mountains over 2,000 years ago, the Banaue Rice Terraces are a living testament to Ifugao ingenuity. Often called the 'Eighth Wonder of the World', this UNESCO-listed landscape is not a single sight but a vast, still-farmed network of terraces that cascade down valleys like giant staircases to the sky. The cool mountain air, the sound of trickling irrigation channels, and the sight of farmers in conical hats working the paddies make this one of the Philippines' most soul-stirring destinations.
Highlights & What to See
- Banaue Rice Terraces Viewpoint: The classic postcard panorama – best seen at sunrise when mist lifts to reveal the tiered emerald slopes. A short tricycle ride from town.
- Batad Rice Terraces: The most dramatic amphitheatre-shaped terraces, a 1.5-hour trek from the village. Stay overnight in a simple homestay to catch dawn over the paddies.
- Bangaan Rice Terraces: Less crowded than Batad, with a traditional Ifugao village perched at the edge of the terraces. A photogenic blend of culture and nature.
- Tappiya Falls: A refreshing 50-metre waterfall at the base of the Batad terraces – perfect for a cooldown after the steep descent.
- Banaue Museum: A small but insightful collection of Ifugao artifacts, including bulul (rice gods) and antique jewellery, offering context to the terraces' spiritual significance.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give Banaue at least 2–3 full days. Day one: arrive, visit the main viewpoint and the museum. Day two: trek to Batad (4–5 hours round trip) and stay overnight for sunrise. Day three: explore Bangaan or Hapao terraces before heading out. If you're short on time, a full-day Batad trek is the quintessential Banaue experience – but you'll wish you had longer.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Hungduan: Home to the less-visited but equally stunning Hungduan Rice Terraces, a UNESCO component site with fewer crowds.
- Kiangan: The site of the Yamashita Shrine and a war museum – a poignant stop for WWII history buffs, just 30 minutes from Banaue.
