Bagni San Filippo
Hidden in the dense forests of southern Tuscany, Bagni San Filippo is a wild thermal paradise far removed from the polished spa resorts of the region. Here, steaming waterfalls cascade over dramatic limestone formations, creating natural hot pools that feel like a secret discovered only by locals and in-the-know travellers. The centrepiece is the Fosso Bianco, a milky-white travertine cliff shaped by centuries of mineral-rich water — a surreal, almost lunar landscape you can soak in for free.
Highlights & What to See
- Fosso Bianco (White Ditch): The main thermal area — a series of natural pools and cascades where you can bathe in warm, sulphurous water while gazing at the dramatic white rock formations.
- Balena Bianca (White Whale): A massive travertine boulder smoothed by water into a whale-like shape; a popular spot for photos and a quick dip.
- Le Terme Libere: The free hot springs — no entry fee, no frills, just pure thermal bliss. Arrive early to claim a spot.
- Piscina Naturale: A shallow, warm pool near the parking area, ideal for a relaxing soak with minimal walking.
- Sentiero della Balena: A short woodland trail connecting the parking area to the main pools, offering glimpses of the forest and steam rising from the creek.

Most visitors spend 2–3 hours soaking in the pools and exploring the immediate area. Combine it with a morning or afternoon visit to nearby Monte Amiata or the village of San Filippo for lunch. If you want a truly serene experience, arrive at sunrise or late afternoon to avoid crowds.
