Perched on the left bank of the Rhine, Bacharach is the quintessential medieval wine town, all half-timbered houses, cobbled lanes and vine-clad hillsides. Its name derives from the Celtic for 'altar to Bacchus', and the Romans were the first to plant vines here. Today, this pocket-sized gem is a highlight of the Rhine Valley, offering a perfect blend of history, wine culture, and river scenery.
Highlights & What to See
- Burg Stahleck – a mighty 12th-century hilltop castle turned youth hostel, with sweeping views of the Rhine and the town. The short uphill walk is rewarded with postcard-perfect panoramas.
- Altes Haus – a crooked, half-timbered wonder from 1368, one of the most photographed buildings in Germany. Its ground floor is a cozy wine tavern.
- Wine tastings at local Weinstuben – Bacharach is the heart of the Mittelrhein wine region. Try the crisp Rieslings at family-run wine bars like Weinhaus Bastian or the historic Altes Brauhaus.
- St. Peter's Church – a Gothic church with stunning stained glass and a Romanesque cloister. Climb its tower for more Rhine views.
- Wandering the medieval town wall – the intact wall, peppered with towers and gates, offers a peaceful stroll and a sense of stepping back in time.
Suggested Time to Spend
Bacharach is compact but rich. A half-day is enough to explore the old town, climb to the castle, and enjoy a wine tasting. For a leisurely pace, stay overnight to catch the sunset over the river from the castle terrace and experience the town after the day-trippers leave. If you're cycle touring the Rhine, Bacharach makes a delightful lunch or coffee stop.
