Imagine a landscape shaped by ancient fire – a sweeping plateau of extinct volcanoes, deep green valleys, and craggy peaks that rise like sleeping giants. The Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Nature Park (Parc Naturel Régional des Volcans d'Auvergne) is one of Europe's most dramatic volcanic regions, yet it remains wonderfully untouristed. Here you can hike up the iconic Puy de Dôme, explore the lunar-like summit of the Puy de Sancy (the highest point in central France), and wander through medieval villages built from dark volcanic stone. The park is a paradise for hikers, cyclists, and anyone who loves wild, open landscapes – and it’s easily woven into a self-drive itinerary through the Massif Central.
Highlights & What to See
- Puy de Dôme – The park’s most famous peak, a perfectly symmetrical volcanic dome. You can hike up (45 minutes) or take the panoramic train; the 360° view from the top is breathtaking, with the entire Chaîne des Puys laid out before you.
- Puy de Sancy – The highest summit in the Massif Central (1,885 m). A cable car runs partway, then a steep but rewarding hike leads to a viewpoint over deep glacial valleys and distant peaks.
- Chaîne des Puys – A 40 km line of 80 volcanic cones, craters, and domes, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Drive the scenic route or hike between craters for an otherworldly experience.
- Le Mont-Dore – A charming spa town with Belle Époque architecture, thermal baths, and excellent hiking trails into the Sancy massif. Try the local cheese and cured meats.
- Vulcania – An interactive volcano-themed amusement park that’s great for families, with 3D simulations, lava flows, and a giant volcano slide.
- Saint-Nectaire – A picture-perfect village with a Romanesque church and the source of the famous Saint-Nectaire cheese. Visit a local farm for a tasting.
Suggested Time to Spend
To truly experience the park’s diversity, plan for at least three days. Day one: explore the Chaîne des Puys and hike Puy de Dôme. Day two: drive to the Puy de Sancy area, take the cable car, and hike to the summit, then relax in Le Mont-Dore. Day three: visit Vulcania (half day) and a cheese farm in Saint-Nectaire. If you have more time, add a day for longer hikes or a visit to the medieval town of Salers on the park’s western edge.
