Arkaroo Rock is a striking granite outcrop in the Flinders Ranges of South Australia, renowned for its ancient Aboriginal rock art. The site offers a tangible connection to the Adnyamathanha people, whose ochre paintings of animals, footprints, and ceremonial symbols adorn the rock shelter. The short walk to the site is an experience in itself, winding through a landscape of red earth, spinifex, and river red gums.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate 1–1.5 hours for the walk and to appreciate the art. This includes time to read the interpretive signage and absorb the setting. It’s best done in the cooler morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and to catch the low-angle light on the paintings. Arkaroo Rock is a compact stop that fits easily into a half-day exploration of the southern Flinders Ranges.
