Thundering into a dark, ancient gorge, Apsley Falls is one of the most dramatic waterfalls in New South Wales. Located within Oxley Wild Rivers National Park, the falls plunge over 100 metres into a sheer-sided canyon, creating a misty spectacle that shifts with the light. The viewing platforms offer heart-stopping perspectives, and the surrounding bushland is alive with birdlife and wildflowers. This is a must-stop on any New England road trip, offering a raw, powerful encounter with the Australian wilderness.
Highlights & What to See
- Upper Falls Lookout: A short wheelchair-accessible walk leads to a platform directly above the main drop – feel the spray and hear the roar as water disappears into the abyss.
- Lower Falls Lookout: Descend the partly sealed track (1 km return, some stairs) for a jaw-dropping view of the full cascade from within the gorge.
- Rim Walk Loop: For those with sturdy shoes, this 4 km circuit follows the cliff edge, offering alternating views of the falls and the wild Oxley River valley.
- Picnic and BBQ Facilities: The grassy area near the car park is perfect for a lunch break with a view – keep an eye out for kangaroos grazing at dusk.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1 to 2 hours exploring the main lookouts and taking a short walk. If you plan to hike the Rim Walk or birdwatch in the surrounding forest, allow half a day. The falls are most impressive after rain (typically spring and autumn), but the gorge is always photogenic. Arrive in the late afternoon for golden light on the cliffs.
