Apollo Bay is a laid-back coastal town on the Great Ocean Road, cradled by the Otway Ranges and the Southern Ocean. It's the perfect base for exploring the wild beaches, ancient rainforests, and the iconic Twelve Apostles further west. With a lively fishing harbour, a string of excellent cafes, and a slow, salty rhythm, Apollo Bay feels like a genuine seaside escape rather than a tourist trap.
Highlights & What to See
- Great Ocean Road: The drive itself is an attraction – curve along clifftops with endless ocean views, stopping at lookouts like Marriners Lookout for a postcard panorama of the bay.
- Wildlife on the Water: Join a boat tour to spot southern right whales (June–September), or see seals, dolphins, and albatross year-round. The harbour also runs fishing charters.
- Otway National Park: Step into cool, ferny rainforest on walks like the Maits Rest Rainforest Walk (easy boardwalk) or the more challenging Triplet Falls loop. Keep an eye out for glow-worms after dark.
- Apollo Bay Farmers Market: Held on the first Saturday of each month, this is a feast of local cheeses, berries, freshly shucked oysters, and artisan bread – perfect for a picnic.
- Beaches: The main beach is patrolled in summer and great for swimming. For solitude, walk south along the foreshore to the wilder stretches near the golf course.
Suggested Time to Spend
Apollo Bay works wonderfully as a two-night stop on a Great Ocean Road itinerary. Spend one day exploring the Otway rainforests and waterfalls, and another on the coast – either relaxing on the beach, taking a wildlife cruise, or driving west to the Twelve Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge. If you're short on time, even a single overnight break allows for a sunset walk on the beach and a morning in the national park.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Great Otway National Park – direct access from town, with hikes, waterfalls, and glow-worm walks.
- Cape Otway Lightstation – Australia's oldest surviving lighthouse, with a sobering history and prime whale-watching.
- Twelve Apostles & Loch Ard Gorge – about 40 minutes west, these limestone stacks and sea caves are the region's showstoppers.
- Port Campbell National Park – a short drive further, with the Arch, London Bridge, and the Grotto.
- Lorne – east along the Great Ocean Road, a chic beach town with great surf and the Erskine Falls.
