Flowing through the heart of the Auvergne, the Allier River Valley is a serene landscape of rolling hills, volcanic peaks, and medieval villages. This off-the-beaten-path region offers a glimpse into rural French life, with its wild gorges, Romanesque churches, and excellent hiking trails. The river itself is a haven for wildlife, including beavers and otters, and the valley is dotted with charming towns like Brioude and Langeac.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for at least two to three days to explore the valley at a relaxed pace. Spend one day driving the scenic route from Brioude to Langeac, stopping at viewpoints and for short hikes. A second day can be devoted to water activities or visiting castles. If you're a keen hiker or wildlife enthusiast, add an extra day to tackle a section of the GR300 or join a guided beaver-watching tour.
