The Houtman Abrolhos, a chain of 122 islands lying 60 kilometres off Western Australia's coast, form one of the country's most pristine and historically rich marine parks. This remote archipelago is a diver's paradise, home to the southernmost coral reefs in the Indian Ocean, rare seabird colonies, and the haunting wrecks of Dutch East India Company ships. Access is strictly by boat or scenic flight from Geraldton, adding to the sense of discovery.
Highlights & What to See
- Diving & snorkelling – Explore vibrant coral gardens, limestone caves, and swim-throughs teeming with tropical fish, moray eels, and wobbegong sharks. The clear, warm waters (20–24°C) make for excellent visibility.
- Batavia Shipwreck & Visitor Centre – The wreck of the Batavia (1629) and its tragic mutiny story is a major draw. The onsite museum on East Wallabi Island displays recovered artefacts and tells the gripping tale.
- Sea lion & seabird colonies – The islands host the largest breeding population of Australian sea lions in WA, plus thousands of white-bellied sea eagles, terns, and the endemic Abrolhos painted button-quail.
- Lobster fishing & crayfish – The Abrolhos are the heart of WA's rock lobster fishery. Join a guided fishing charter or simply watch the working boats from the water.
- Scenic flights – A flight from Geraldton reveals the startling geometry of the islands – turquoise lagoons ringed by white sand – and the vivid contrast between the coral reefs and the deep blue ocean.
Suggested Time to Spend
Given the logistics of reaching the park (a 2.5-hour boat ride or 1-hour flight from Geraldton), plan a minimum of two full days. Most visitors join a liveaboard or multi-day charter that includes diving, island walks, and history tours. A day trip is possible but feels rushed – you'll want at least one overnight to experience the sunset over the lagoon and the dawn seabird chorus.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Geraldton – The gateway town offers the Western Australian Museum – Geraldton (with the Batavia Gallery), HMAS Sydney Memorial, and excellent seafood restaurants.
- Kalbarri National Park – A 1.5-hour drive north, famous for the Murchison River gorge, coastal cliffs, and wildflower displays in spring.
- Jurien Bay – A 2-hour drive south, with calm waters for swimming, sea lion tours, and the Pinnacles Desert at Nambung National Park nearby.
- Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory (MRO) – For science buffs, the Square Kilometre Array pathfinder site near Boolardy is a unique detour (by arrangement).
