Wyangala Waters State Park is a sprawling, ruggedly beautiful park centred on the vast Wyangala Dam, where the Lachlan River meets the open plains of inland New South Wales. This is a place for water lovers, campers, and anyone seeking a genuine outback-meets-lake escape. The landscape is classic Australian bush: red dirt, eucalypt woodlands, and shimmering blue water stretching to the horizon. It’s a favourite for fishing, boating, and swimming, with a laid-back, community feel that’s a world away from the coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Wyangala Dam Wall – Walk or drive across this impressive 1.4 km concrete wall for panoramic views of the lake and the Lachlan Valley. It’s a photographer’s dream at sunrise or sunset.
- Water Sports on the Dam – The lake is a paradise for boating, water-skiing, kayaking, and sailing. Bring your own gear or hire from local operators in season.
- Fishing for Murray Cod and Golden Perch – Wyangala is renowned for its freshwater fishing. Cast a line from the shore, a boat, or try your luck at the dam wall.
- Bushwalking and Birdwatching – Explore the park’s network of trails through box-gum woodlands. Keep an eye out for kangaroos, emus, and a huge variety of birdlife, including wedge-tailed eagles.
- Camping Under the Stars – Choose from basic bush campsites or more developed areas with facilities. Falling asleep to the sound of lapping water and cicadas is unforgettable.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give yourself at least a full day to truly appreciate the park. If you’re camping, a weekend is ideal – arrive Friday afternoon, spend Saturday on the water or exploring, and head back Sunday after a leisurely morning. Day-trippers from Canberra (about 2.5 hours away) can make it work, but you’ll want to leave early to maximise time. For a relaxed pace, two nights allows for both a full day of activities and a lazy afternoon by the lake.
