Stretching south and west of Canberra, the Southern Tablelands offer a quintessentially Australian high-country landscape of rolling green hills, historic villages, and wildflower-filled bushland. This is a region where you can trace gold rush history, explore deep limestone caves, and soak up the crisp, clean air on a scenic drive. The pace is unhurried, the produce is renowned, and the sense of space is immense — perfect for a self-drive escape from the capital.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Three to four days allows you to explore the key towns and natural attractions at a comfortable pace. Use Canberra as a base for day trips to Yass and Braidwood, or base yourself in Goulburn for access to the southern parks. If you plan to hike in Kosciuszko National Park or explore the caves, allow at least a full day for each activity. A self-drive loop from Canberra through Goulburn, Yass, and Braidwood is a classic itinerary.
