Perched on the western edge of the Blue Mountains, Oberon is a tranquil high-country town that feels a world away from the bustle of Sydney. At 1,100 metres above sea level, its crisp air and sprawling pine forests make it a year-round escape for walkers, anglers and anyone who loves big skies and starry nights. The town itself is small and unpretentious, but the surrounding landscape – a patchwork of national parks, caves and trout streams – rewards those who linger.
Highlights & What to See
- Jenolan Caves – Just a 30-minute drive from Oberon, these ancient limestone caves are among the best in Australia. Join a guided tour through the glittering Cathedral or Orient Cave, then walk the bush trails above ground.
- Mayfield Garden – Australia’s largest privately owned cool-climate garden. Wander through structured European-style parterres, a Japanese-inspired section and a sprawling arboretum – particularly stunning in autumn when the maples turn.
- Oberon Dam & Fish River – A serene spot for a picnic or a trout-fishing session. The dam wall offers sweeping views across the water to the surrounding pine plantations.
- Oberon Common & Golf Course – A peaceful stretch of bushland with walking trails and a nine-hole golf course. Keep an eye out for kangaroos grazing at dawn and dusk.
- Oberon Tarana Heritage Railway – On select weekends, climb aboard a restored vintage rail motor for a scenic journey through the rolling countryside to Tarana.
Suggested Time to Spend
Oberon works well as a two-night stop on a Blue Mountains or Southern Highlands itinerary. One full day is enough to explore Jenolan Caves, Mayfield Garden and the dam, while a second day allows for a deeper bushwalk or a heritage train ride. If you’re pressed for time, you can cover the highlights in a day trip from Bathurst or Katoomba, but you’ll miss the evening calm and the star-filled sky.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Bathurst – 45 minutes east, famous for its Mount Panorama racing circuit, historic gold-rush architecture and the Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum.
- Blue Mountains National Park – Head east to Katoomba and the Three Sisters, or explore less-visited sections such as the Kanangra-Boyd Wilderness for epic sandstone escarpments.
- Jenolan Caves – Already mentioned, but worth reiterating: pair Oberon with a full day at the caves for a complete underground and above-ground adventure.
- Hartley Historic Site – A preserved 19th-century village with convict-built buildings, just off the Great Western Highway between Oberon and Lithgow.
- Canberra – About 2.5 hours south, Australia’s capital offers world-class museums, galleries and the alpine-flavoured Namadgi National Park.
