Just a 15-minute drive from Canberra’s city centre, Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary feels a world away. This 1,200-hectare feral-proof sanctuary protects a rare patch of box-gum grassy woodland, one of Australia’s most endangered ecosystems. With its predator-proof fence and thriving population of eastern bettongs, the sanctuary offers a rare chance to see the bush as it was before European settlement. It’s a must for wildlife lovers, hikers, and anyone seeking a serene escape into nature.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Half a day is ideal – arrive in the late afternoon to explore the trails as the light softens, then stay for the twilight wildlife tour. If you’re short on time, a two-hour visit still allows for a walk on the Discovery Loop and a peek through the viewing hide. The sanctuary is open 24/7 for walkers, but note that the car park gates are locked from dusk to dawn unless you’ve booked a night tour.
