Just a 15-minute drive from Canberra’s city centre, Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary feels a world away. This 1,200-hectare feral-proof sanctuary protects a rare patch of box-gum grassy woodland, one of Australia’s most endangered ecosystems. With its predator-proof fence and thriving population of eastern bettongs, the sanctuary offers a rare chance to see the bush as it was before European settlement. It’s a must for wildlife lovers, hikers, and anyone seeking a serene escape into nature.
Highlights & What to See
- Eastern Bettongs – Once extinct on the mainland, these adorable marsupials now hop freely. Visit at dusk for the best chance to spot them.
- Night Tours – Join a guided spotlight walk to see bettongs, echidnas, and owls. Book ahead; they’re popular.
- Woodland Walks – The 1.5 km Discovery Loop is perfect for families; the longer 4 km Goorooyarroo Trail offers sweeping views.
- Birdwatching – Keep an eye out for superb parrots, gang-gang cockatoos, and the rare brown treecreeper.
- Wildflowers – In spring, the woodland floor explodes with bluebells and golden wattles.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ideal – arrive in the late afternoon to explore the trails as the light softens, then stay for the twilight wildlife tour. If you’re short on time, a two-hour visit still allows for a walk on the Discovery Loop and a peek through the viewing hide. The sanctuary is open 24/7 for walkers, but note that the car park gates are locked from dusk to dawn unless you’ve booked a night tour.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Canberra – Combine with a visit to the Australian War Memorial or the National Arboretum for a full day of nature and culture.
- Mount Majura Nature Reserve – A short drive south, this reserve offers more walking trails and panoramic views over the city.
- Lake Burley Griffin – Perfect for a sunset stroll or a picnic after your sanctuary visit.
- Jerrabomberra Wetlands – Another wildlife hotspot, just 20 minutes away, great for birding.
