Perched on the western edge of the Blue Mountains, Lithgow is a rugged industrial town with a fascinating past and a dramatic natural setting. Its heritage as a coal-mining and railway hub is etched into the landscape, from historic bridges to steam trains. But beyond the soot and steel, you’ll find spectacular bushwalking, roaring waterfalls, and a gateway to the wilder reaches of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. This is a place where you can explore pioneer history in the morning and plunge into a canyon by afternoon.
Highlights & What to See
- Zig Zag Railway: Ride a heritage steam train along a spectacular 19th-century mountain railway, winding through sandstone cuttings and over lofty viaducts. It’s a living museum of railway engineering.
- Lithgow Blast Furnace: Wander the eerie remains of Australia’s first iron and steelworks, a rusted industrial ghost that tells the story of the town’s founding industry.
- Eskbank House & Museum: Step into a beautifully preserved 1840s homestead filled with local memorabilia, from Aboriginal artefacts to colonial furniture – a perfect primer on Lithgow’s past.
- Glow Worm Tunnel: Hike through a disused railway tunnel to see thousands of bioluminescent glow worms on the ceiling – an otherworldly experience best done at dusk.
- Waterfall Way: Chase cascades such as the 100-metre-high Wentworth Falls (not to be confused with its Blue Mountains namesake) and the twin drops of Magdala Falls, both accessible via short walks.
- Gardens of Stone National Park: Explore a surreal landscape of pagoda-like rock formations, deep canyons, and pagoda-shaped cliffs – a quieter, wilder alternative to the crowded Blue Mountains lookouts.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers find a full day sufficient to see Lithgow’s core attractions: the Zig Zag Railway and Blast Furnace in the morning, then a waterfall walk or a quick tunnel visit in the afternoon. If you want to hike in Gardens of Stone or explore the glow worm tunnel, plan for an overnight stay – there are a handful of motels and pubs in town. Lithgow also works well as a lunch stop on a Sydney-to-Central West road trip.
