Adelong is a tiny historic gold-mining village tucked into the rolling hills of the Riverina region, just a short detour from the Hume Highway. With its preserved 19th-century streetscape, a lively local pub, and the haunting remains of the Adelong Falls gold workings, it offers a quiet, authentic taste of Australia’s gold-rush past without the crowds of bigger heritage towns.
Highlights & What to See
- Adelong Falls Gold Workings Reserve – Wander the interpretive trail past stamp batteries, water races and the ruins of the largest gold-treatment plant in the southern hemisphere. The bushland setting and the roar of the falls make it deeply atmospheric.
- Historic Main Street – A perfectly preserved 1860s streetscape with verandahed shopfronts, the original post office and the grand Adelong Hotel (pop in for a cold beer and a yarn with locals).
- Adelong Cemetery – A poignant glimpse of pioneer life, with headstones telling stories of early settlers, miners and the Chinese community who worked the diggings.
- Chinese Tribute Gardens – A peaceful memorial beside the creek, honouring the Chinese miners who made up a third of the town’s population during the gold rush.
Suggested Time to Spend
A half-day is ample to explore the main street, the falls reserve and the cemetery. If you’re a keen walker or history buff, allow a full day to follow the self-guided heritage trail and picnic by the creek. Adelong works well as a 1–2 hour stopover if you’re driving between Sydney and Melbourne – pull off the highway for a coffee and a wander.
