Western Australia Day is observed on the first Monday in June, celebrating the anniversary of the founding of the Swan River Colony on 1 June 1829 by Captain James Stirling. Formerly known as Foundation Day, the name was changed to Western Australia Day in 2012. Because WA observes King's Birthday in September, this holiday provides a mid-year long weekend in lieu.
