Canberra Day is observed on the 2nd Monday in March in the Australian Capital Territory. It commemorates the founding of the city of Canberra, which was officially named and had its foundation stones laid on 12 March 1913. Canberra was purpose-built as the national capital as a compromise between the rival cities of Sydney and Melbourne after Federation in 1901.
