The Pinnacles
Rising from the golden sands of Nambung National Park, the Pinnacles are one of Western Australia's most surreal landscapes. Thousands of ancient limestone pillars, some reaching up to 3.5 metres, stand like fossilised trees in a stark desert setting. This otherworldly sight is best appreciated at sunrise or sunset when the low light casts long shadows and paints the formations in warm hues. A self-drive loop road lets you explore at your own pace, and boardwalks allow closer inspection of the fragile limestone.
Highlights & What to See
- Pinnacles Desert Drive Loop: A 4.5-kilometre one-way track that weaves through the heart of the formations; stop at designated viewpoints and walkways.
- Pinnacles Lookout: A short boardwalk offering panoramic views over the desert – particularly stunning at sunset.
- Nambung National Park Wildlife: Keep an eye out for emus, kangaroos, and a variety of birdlife that thrive in this arid environment.
- Lake Thetis and Stromatolites: A short detour from the park entrance to see some of the world's oldest living fossils – dome-shaped microbialites.
- Hangover Bay: A nearby coastal spot with white sand and turquoise water, perfect for a picnic or a refreshing swim after the desert.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours driving the loop and walking the boardwalks, but if you want to capture the golden light, plan for sunset (about 2–3 hours total). The Pinnacles can easily be visited as a half-day trip from Perth (2 hours north), or combine with a longer journey up the Coral Coast. Arrive early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid heat and crowds.
