Ningaloo Reef

Stretching over 300 kilometres along Western Australia’s remote Coral Coast, Ningaloo Reef is one of the world’s largest fringing reefs and a snorkeller’s paradise. Unlike its more famous eastern cousin, the Great Barrier Reef, Ningaloo is accessible straight from the beach — no boat required. The turquoise waters teem with marine life, and the star attraction is the gentle whale shark, which visits from March to July. This is a place where you can slip into the water and be surrounded by colourful coral gardens, manta rays, sea turtles, and reef sharks within minutes. The laid-back town of Exmouth and the quieter settlement of Coral Bay serve as gateways to this World Heritage-listed wonder.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Three to five days gives you time to experience the reef’s highlights without rushing. Arrive in Exmouth or Coral Bay, and plan at least two full days for snorkelling and a whale shark or manta ray tour. Add a day to explore the Cape Range National Park’s gorges and beaches, and another to simply relax by the water. If you’re driving from Perth, budget at least two days each way; the journey is part of the adventure, with dramatic outback scenery and wildflower displays in spring.
