Lancelin is a laid-back coastal town about a two-hour drive north of Perth, famous for its towering white sand dunes and turquoise waters. This is the place to come for adrenaline-pumping sandboarding, four-wheel driving on the beach, and some of the best windsurfing and kitesurfing in Western Australia. The town itself has a sleepy, friendly vibe, with a handful of cafes, a general store, and a pub that feels like the heart of the community.
Highlights & What to See
- Lancelin Sand Dunes – Huge, pristine white dunes that are perfect for sandboarding (you can hire boards in town) or simply rolling down. The views from the top across the ocean are stunning.
- Lancelin Beach – A long, sweeping beach with soft sand and clear water, ideal for swimming, fishing, and beachcombing. The southern end is a popular spot for four-wheel driving.
- Windsurfing & Kitesurfing – Lancelin is a world-class destination for wind sports, with consistent sea breezes from spring to autumn. Watch the colourful kites dance across the waves or take a lesson.
- Lancelin Island – A short boat ride or kayak trip away, this nature reserve offers snorkelling, birdwatching, and a chance to see sea lions basking on the rocks.
- Lobster Fishing – The local crayfish (rock lobster) is legendary. You can try your luck off the jetty or join a charter – and the pub cooks them up fresh.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors come as a day trip from Perth, but to truly experience the dunes, the beach, and the wind, plan for at least one overnight stay. A weekend is ideal: spend the first day sandboarding and exploring the dunes, then the second day on the water or driving the beach tracks. If you're on a longer self-drive itinerary, Lancelin makes a perfect stop between Perth and the Pinnacles or Cervantes.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- The Pinnacles – Just 45 minutes north, the otherworldly limestone formations of Nambung National Park are a must-see, especially at sunset.
- Cervantes – A small fishing town famous for its lobster shack and the nearby Lake Thetis stromatolites.
- Jurien Bay – A laid-back coastal town with beautiful beaches and the chance to swim with sea lions.
- Yanchep National Park – On the way from Perth, stop to see koalas in the wild and explore limestone caves.
