Telfer

Telfer, a remote gold-mining town in the Great Sandy Desert of Western Australia's Kimberley region, is not your typical tourist destination—it's a fly-in, fly-out mining settlement with no public access. However, its extreme isolation and the surrounding raw, red-earth landscapes hold a stark allure for those fascinated by Australia's outback mining frontier. The town exists primarily to service the Telfer gold and copper mine, one of Australia's largest gold producers. While you won't find cafes or accommodation for visitors, the journey through this vast, empty country offers a profound sense of solitude and the chance to witness the desert's harsh beauty.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Telfer itself is not a place to linger—a brief stop of 30 minutes to an hour is enough to appreciate the mine view and the desert silence. Most travellers pass through en route between other Kimberley destinations, combining it with a longer journey across the Great Sandy Desert. Allocate at least a full day for the drive from Newman or Port Hedland, factoring in rough roads and fuel stops. Unless you work at the mine, you won't stay overnight; the nearest accommodation is in Newman (about 400 km south) or along the Canning Stock Route.
