South Mole Lighthouse

Rising from the end of Fremantle's southern breakwater, South Mole Lighthouse is a slender, whitewashed sentinel that has guided ships into the port since 1903. While it's not open for climbing, the real draw here is the jaw-dropping panorama of the Indian Ocean, the bustling harbour, and Fremantle's historic skyline. It's a magnet for photographers at sunset, when the lighthouse glows golden against the darkening sea, and a favourite spot for locals casting a line off the rocks. The short walk along the mole is pure Indian Ocean coast magic — salt spray, sea breezes, and the rhythmic thud of waves against granite blocks.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Budget about 30 minutes to an hour for the round-trip walk from the car park at the base of the mole. Most visitors come for sunset and linger a bit longer, so plan to arrive 45 minutes before sundown to soak in the changing light. If you're keen on fishing or just want to sit and watch the harbour activity, allow up to two hours. The lighthouse is an easy add-on to a half-day or full-day exploring Fremantle.
