Wilsons Promontory
Wilsons Promontory, or 'The Prom' as locals call it, is Victoria's wildest and most beloved national park. A granite peninsula jutting into Bass Strait, it's a realm of pristine beaches, lush rainforest, and granite peaks. The journey here is as much a part of the experience as the destination—a winding drive through rolling farmland and coastal scrub. Once inside, the air smells of eucalyptus and salt, and the only sounds are crashing waves and bird calls. This is a place for hikers, campers, and anyone craving raw, untamed nature.
Highlights & What to See
- Squeaky Beach: The name says it all—walk on the fine, quartz sand and it literally squeaks underfoot. The turquoise water and huge granite boulders make it a perfect spot for a swim or photo op.
- Tidal River Campground: The hub of the park, set along a tidal river. Even if you're not camping, stop at the visitor centre for trail info and a glimpse of the resident wombats that wander the grounds at dusk.
- Mount Oberon Summit Walk: A steep but rewarding 3.4 km return hike through coastal heathland. From the top, you get a 360-degree view of the entire promontory, offshore islands, and the ocean—best at sunset.
- Wildlife encounters: The Prom is a sanctuary for kangaroos, emus, wombats, and echidnas. Keep your eyes peeled on the side of the road, especially around dawn and dusk.
- Lilly Pilly Gully Nature Walk: An easy 1 km loop through a ferny, temperate rainforest with a boardwalk over a creek—a cool escape on a hot day.
Suggested Time to Spend
To truly soak in The Prom, plan at least two full days—longer if you're a keen hiker. Day-trippers from Melbourne (about 3 hours' drive) can tackle a couple of short walks and a beach visit, but you'll feel rushed. Overnighters have the advantage of catching sunrise at Squeaky Beach or a dusk walk for wildlife. If you're camping, three to four days allows for the classic multi-day hike—the Prom Circuit—or a mix of coastal walks, kayaking, and swimming.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Phillip Island: Famous for the Penguin Parade, this island also has great surf beaches and a koala conservation centre. About 1.5 hours' drive from The Prom, it's a natural pairing for a wildlife-themed road trip.
- Melbourne: The vibrant capital is your gateway, with its laneways, food scene, and cultural institutions. Start or end your Prom trip here, stocking up on supplies and enjoying city comforts.
- Geelong: The waterfront city on Corio Bay has a revived arts precinct and the stunning Bellarine Peninsula. It's a pleasant stop on the way from Melbourne, with great seafood and the famous bollard sculptures.
- Yanakie: The small town just outside the park entrance has accommodation and basic supplies. It's a handy base if you can't get a spot inside the park.
