Wilsons Promontory National Park, affectionately known as ‘The Prom’, is Victoria’s most beloved coastal wilderness. This granite peninsula juts into Bass Strait, fringed by dazzling white-sand beaches, lush rainforest gullies, and granite peaks. It’s a haven for hikers, wildlife enthusiasts, and anyone craving untamed nature—expect kangaroos, wombats, and emus roaming freely, and offshore islands where seals and seabirds thrive.
Highlights & What to See
- Tidal River – The park’s hub, with a campground and access to stunning walks. Don’t miss the short boardwalk through Moonlit Sanctuary for nocturnal wildlife.
- Mount Oberon Summit – A rewarding 3.4 km return hike to panoramic views over the promontory and Bass Strait. Best at sunset.
- Squeaky Beach – Famous for its pure quartz sand that squeaks underfoot. Turquoise waters and giant granite boulders make it a perfect picnic spot.
- Prom Wildlife Walk – A gentle loop from Tidal River where you’re almost guaranteed to spot wombats, wallabies, and emus.
- Lighthouse & South Point – The 19 km one-way hike to the lighthouse is a classic overnight trek, passing secluded coves and the most southerly point of mainland Australia.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–3 days to fully experience the park. A day trip can cover Mount Oberon and Squeaky Beach, but an overnight stay at Tidal River (book well ahead) lets you explore the longer coastal trails and enjoy the wildlife at dawn and dusk. For serious hikers, the 3–4 day Southern Prom Circuit is unforgettable.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
