Port Fairy is a historic fishing village on Victoria's Shipwreck Coast, where bluestone cottages and a working harbour meet wild beaches and abundant wildlife. This is a place to slow down: wander the streets lined with Norfolk pines, watch fishing boats unload their catch, and feel the salt air that has inspired artists and writers for generations. The town’s well-preserved 19th-century architecture and relaxed atmosphere make it a perfect coastal retreat.
Highlights & What to See
- Griffiths Island – Just a short walk from town, this nature reserve is home to a large colony of short-tailed shearwaters (muttonbirds). Time your visit for dusk from October to April to see thousands return to their burrows.
- Port Fairy Maritime Village – Step inside the old wharf sheds to explore exhibits on shipwrecks, whaling, and the town's seafaring history.
- East Beach & South Beach – Sweeping, unspoiled beaches perfect for long walks, birdwatching, and spotting dolphins in the surf.
- Moyne River foreshore – Stroll along the river lined with historic cottages, galleries, and cafés. Don't miss the Port Fairy Bakery for a pasty.
- Port Fairy Folk Festival – Held over the Labour Day weekend in March, this is one of Australia's premier folk music events, drawing performers and crowds from around the world.

If you're on a Great Ocean Road itinerary, a night here is a must – it's the perfect place to break the journey between Warrnambool and the Twelve Apostles. For walkers, allow an extra day to explore the nearby Discovery Bay Coastal Park.
