Standing sentinel over Melbourne’s southern skyline, the Shrine of Remembrance is the city’s most powerful war memorial and a masterwork of classical architecture. Built to honour Victorians who served in World War I, its imposing grey granite form draws the eye from across the Domain parklands. Inside, the Sanctuary glows with a single beam of light that falls on the Stone of Remembrance at exactly 11 a.m. on 11 November each year. Climb the steps to the balcony for sweeping views across the Royal Botanic Gardens, St Kilda Road, and the city centre – a perspective that connects Melbourne’s past with its present.
