Mackenzie Falls
Plunging over 30 metres into a deep, rocky gorge, Mackenzie Falls is one of Victoria's most spectacular waterfalls, located within the Grampians National Park. The constant mist and lush vegetation create a cool, refreshing microclimate — a welcome break on a hot day. The falls are accessible via a well-maintained walking track with several lookout points, and the thunder of the water is a constant companion as you descend.
Highlights & What to See
- Mackenzie Falls Lookout: The main viewing platform offers a breathtaking panorama of the falls and the surrounding sandstone cliffs. Arrive early to catch the morning light hitting the water.
- The plunge pool: On warm days, take the steep but rewarding walk down to the base of the falls (about 300 steps) where you can feel the spray and dip your toes in the cool water.
- Fish Falls: A short walk upstream from Mackenzie Falls leads to this smaller, cascading waterfall with its own tranquil pool — often less crowded and perfect for a picnic.
- Grampians Peaks Trail: For serious hikers, this challenging multi-day trail passes near the falls and offers sweeping views over the entire national park.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours at Mackenzie Falls, which allows time for the walk down to the base and back, plus a stop at Fish Falls. If you're keen to explore more of the Grampians, plan for a half-day to combine the falls with nearby lookouts like Boroka Lookout or The Balconies. The best time to visit is in spring or after rain when the water flow is strongest, but the falls are impressive year-round.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Grampians National Park: The entire park is a wonderland of rugged peaks, Aboriginal rock art sites (like Bunjil's Shelter), and abundant wildlife, including kangaroos and emus.
- Halls Gap: The main town in the Grampians, just a 15-minute drive from the falls, offers cafés, galleries, and accommodation — a perfect base for your visit.
- Boroka Lookout: A short drive from Halls Gap, this viewpoint provides stunning panoramic views across the park, especially at sunrise or sunset.
- The Balconies: A famous rock formation offering a dramatic cliff-edge view over the Wimmera Plains — easily combined with a trip to the falls.
- Great Ocean Road: About 2.5 hours south, the iconic coastal drive with the Twelve Apostles and other rock formations makes a natural extension to a Grampians itinerary.
