Federation Square

Federation Square is Melbourne's vibrant cultural heart, a striking public space on the banks of the Yarra River that buzzes with energy day and night. With its bold, angular architecture clad in sandstone and zinc, Fed Square (as locals call it) is a hub for art, events, and simply soaking up Melbourne's cosmopolitan vibe. Grab a coffee from one of the many cafes, watch the world go by, or dive into the galleries and institutions that make this place a must-visit.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate at least half a day to explore Federation Square properly. Start with a coffee at one of the square-side cafes, then spend a couple of hours in ACMI or the Ian Potter Centre. If you're a museum lover, you could easily fill a full day by adding a visit to the nearby NGV International (a 10-minute walk). The square is also a great meeting point before heading out to explore the laneways and bars of the CBD.
