Rising dramatically from the volcanic plains southwest of Ballarat, Mount Buninyong is a striking scoria cone that offers sweeping views over the Goldfields region. This dormant volcano, last active some 15,000 years ago, is now a popular spot for walkers, mountain bikers, and anyone seeking a quick dose of nature without straying far from town. The summit rewards you with a 360-degree panorama of Ballarat, the distant You Yangs, and even Melbourne’s skyline on a clear day. It’s a place where geological history meets everyday recreation.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Half a day is plenty to hike to the summit, explore the crater rim, and perhaps tackle a short mountain bike loop. If you’re combining it with a visit to Sovereign Hill or the Ballarat Wildlife Park, aim for a morning or late afternoon visit – the light at sunset is spectacular. Most visitors spend 2–3 hours on the mountain itself.
