Plunging 30 metres into a fern-lined gorge, Lal Lal Falls is one of Victoria’s most dramatic yet relatively undiscovered waterfalls. Located just 25 minutes from Ballarat, this basalt escarpment cascade is at its most thunderous after rain, when the Moorabool River roars over the edge. The short walk to the lookout is family-friendly, and the surrounding bushland offers a serene escape into the traditional lands of the Wadawurrung people.
Highlights & What to See
- The Main Lookout: A paved path leads to a fenced viewing platform with a direct, heart-stopping view of the falls plunging into the pool below. On misty days, rainbows often appear in the spray.
- Bushwalking Tracks: Follow the Lal Lal Creek walking track for a gentle 2 km loop through tall eucalypts and mossy boulders. Keep an eye out for wallabies and lyrebirds.
- Picnic Area: Spread out a rug under the shade of manna gums at the well-maintained picnic ground, complete with barbecues and tables. It’s a perfect spot for a relaxed lunch.
- Geological Interest: The falls are carved through ancient basalt lava flows from nearby volcanic plains, creating a striking contrast between the dark rock and the white water.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours here, which allows time to admire the falls from the lookout, take a short bushwalk, and enjoy a picnic. If you’re keen on photography or birdwatching, allow an extra hour. The site is compact enough to combine with a morning or afternoon in Ballarat.
