Jan Juc Beach
Jan Juc Beach is a beloved surf break and coastal escape just south of Torquay, offering a raw, untamed stretch of sand that feels a world away from the more crowded beaches of the Surf Coast. With its powerful waves, dramatic rock formations, and sweeping views of Bass Strait, this is where locals come to ride the swell, walk their dogs, or simply soak up the salty atmosphere. The beach is backed by low sand dunes and grassy reserves, making it a perfect spot for a picnic after a swim or a surf.
Highlights & What to See
- Surfing at Jan Juc Reef – A consistent right-hand reef break that works best on a south-west swell, drawing experienced surfers from around the region. Even if you don't surf, watching the waves from the headland is mesmerising.
- Jan Juc Creek Mouth – Where the creek meets the ocean, it creates a calm lagoon perfect for paddling or for kids to splash around. It's also a great spot for birdwatching, with pelicans and terns often seen.
- Bells Beach Lookout – A short walk or drive north takes you to the iconic Bells Beach, home of the Rip Curl Pro. The clifftop views are spectacular, and you can feel the history of Australian surfing in the air.
- Coastal Walk to Torquay – Follow the clifftop path from Jan Juc to Torquay's main beach for stunning ocean vistas, wildflowers in spring, and the chance to spot whales during migration season (June–September).
- Jan Juc Village – A small cluster of cafés and shops just back from the beach, ideal for grabbing a coffee and a bite to eat after a morning in the water. Try the local fish and chips or a hearty breakfast bowl.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers spend half a day to a full day at Jan Juc Beach. If you're a surfer, you could easily spend several hours in the water, then relax on the sand with a book. For a more leisurely visit, arrive mid-morning, take a walk along the clifftop, have lunch at a café, and then head to Bells Beach for sunset. The beach is also a great stop on a self-drive itinerary along the Great Ocean Road, so you might only have an hour or two – still enough for a quick dip and a photo.
