Just 12 kilometres south of Ballarat, Buninyong is a historic gold-rush town that feels like a beautifully preserved secret. Its leafy main street, lined with bluestone buildings and old-fashioned verandahs, leads to a dormant volcano—Mount Buninyong—which offers sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. This is a place where you can wander antique shops, sip coffee in a heritage café, and hike through eucalypt forests without the crowds.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Half a day is ample to explore Buninyong’s main sights and enjoy a meal. If you plan to hike Mount Buninyong, allow 2–3 hours for the return walk. Many visitors combine it with a morning in Ballarat and an afternoon in Buninyong, or vice versa. For a relaxed pace, stay overnight in one of the town’s B&Bs and spend the next day exploring the surrounding countryside.
