Perched at the mouth of the Tamar River, Low Head is a historic coastal village that feels like a step back in time. With its red-and-white striped lighthouse, convict-built pilot station, and sweeping views across Bass Strait, this is where the river meets the sea in dramatic fashion. It’s a place of windswept beaches, maritime heritage, and unexpected wildlife encounters – a perfect half-day escape from Launceston.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Low Head can be explored in a half-day (3–4 hours) if you focus on the lighthouse, pilot station, and a beach walk. For penguin tours, plan to arrive late afternoon and stay until after dusk – the tours run about 90 minutes and are seasonal (September to May). Combine with a visit to nearby George Town or a Tamar Valley winery for a full-day itinerary.
