At the end of the road, where Tasmania's south‑east coast meets the wild Southern Ocean, Cockle Creek is Australia's southernmost accessible beach. This is the last outpost of civilisation before Antarctica — a place of dazzling white sand, turquoise water, and a profound sense of isolation. The drive from Hobart is an adventure in itself, winding through forests and past the Huon Valley, but arriving at this pristine cove feels like reaching the edge of the world.
Highlights & What to See
- South Cape Bay Walk – A 15.4 km (return) track that follows the coast to the dramatic cliffs of South Cape Bay, part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Keep an eye out for whales and seals.
- Boat Harbour Beach – A perfect crescent of white sand with calm, clear water – ideal for a picnic or a refreshing dip.
- Recherche Bay – A historic and scenic bay where French explorers landed in 1792. Interpretive signs tell the story of their encounter with the local Aboriginal people.
- Surrounding National Park – Cockle Creek is the gateway to the Southwest National Park, home to ancient rainforests, button grass plains, and rugged peaks.
- Stargazing – With virtually no light pollution, the night sky here is spectacular. On a clear night, you can see the Milky Way stretching from horizon to horizon.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day at Cockle Creek, allowing time for the South Cape Bay walk and plenty of beach time. If you're keen on exploring the Southwest National Park further, plan for at least two days – you can camp at the basic campground near the beach. The drive from Hobart takes about 2–2.5 hours each way, so an early start is recommended. For a more relaxed pace, consider staying overnight in nearby Dover or Geeveston.
