Nestled on the slopes of kunanyi / Mount Wellington, Fern Tree is a serene mountain village that serves as the gateway to Hobart’s wild backyard. This tiny settlement, draped in lush temperate rainforest, offers a cool escape from the city with its crisp air and the sound of rushing water. It’s a favourite with walkers, trail runners, and anyone craving a quick dose of nature without leaving the greater Hobart area.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend half a day to a full day in Fern Tree. If you’re short on time, a two-hour loop combining the Silver Falls and Fern Tree Bower walks gives a taste of the rainforest. For a more immersive experience, start early and hike to the summit of Mount Wellington (allow 4–5 hours return), then reward yourself with a late lunch at the tavern. The village itself can be seen in 20 minutes, but the surrounding trails invite lingering.
